KS INDUSTRIES TIMELINE

The history of KS Industries from 1975 to the present.

1980 – EXPANDING THE CUSTOMER OFFERING

From the very beginning, greenhouse construction in the nearby Westland region was KS’s primary market. The practical use of roll-formed profiles grew in popularity, and new opportunities emerged in the vehicle body and construction sectors. To meet the demand from these new customer groups, a second roll-forming line was installed. With a capacity for coil steel up to 6 mm, it was ideal for producing standard profiles as well as relatively simple custom profiles. KS continued to grow steadily.

1975 – 1978 – FROM TRADING TO PRODUCTION

In 1975, Piet Noordzij founded a steel profile trading company in Zwijndrecht under the name Kontinex Staal (KS). Business quickly took off. As customer demands became more specific, additional processing such as punching, slotting, and extra bending became increasingly common. To offer customized solutions, Piet purchased his own roll-forming line in 1978. With this, a team of in-house staff began producing U and L profiles from coil steel up to 500 x 4 mm. C profiles followed shortly thereafter.

1985 – IN-HOUSE TOOLSHOP

To meet the specific needs of its clients, KS began producing custom tools for its roll-forming lines. From its in-house toolshop, each customer receives a tailor-made set of tools designed specifically for their profiles.

1995 – NEW OFFICE AND PRODUCTION FACILITY IN MOERDIJK

As the market evolved, the demand for more complex profiles—such as punched profiles with additional deformations—continued to grow. To meet this demand, new roll-forming lines had to be built. KS also invested in its own **slitter** to cut coil steel precisely according to customer specifications. A new factory was constructed in Moerdijk, equipped with a modern machine park. By the end of 1995, KS operated eight roll-forming lines and a slitter, employing nearly 70 people.

1996 – ACQUISITION OF THOMAS REGOUT

KS’s growth continued, driven by strong ambitions. The company’s market share increased significantly with the acquisition of the profile division of Thomas Regout in Maastricht, including five roll-forming lines. This marked a major expansion of the product range, allowing KS to serve an even broader customer base. The production of increasingly complex profiles accelerated, along with the development of KS’s specialized expertise.

2000 – INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS

KS's ambitions expanded beyond national borders. The first deliveries were made in the Benelux and Germany. Clients recognized the added value and quality of the high-grade Dutch product, and the flow of orders began to grow.

2005 – ESTABLISHMENT OF WUPPERTAL OFFICE & TRANSITOWEG FACILITY IN MOERDIJK

The number of clients in Europe increased significantly. As a result, KS Profil GmbH was established in May 2005 in Wuppertal, Germany. This sales office focuses primarily on the German-speaking market. In November of the same year, KS opened a new facility on Transitoweg in Moerdijk. This factory houses a new slitter designed for pre-coated and thin-gauge coil steel, ranging from 0.4 to 4 mm.

2008 – STRATEGIC REORIENTATION

The global financial crisis hit hard, and KS was not spared. The steel industry suffered significant setbacks, and KS also experienced a decline in revenue, which unfortunately led to forced staff reductions. During this period, KS’s management took the opportunity to reflect on the future and make strategic decisions. The focus shifted clearly toward providing greater added value with its profiles. KS began offering additional services alongside profile delivery, aiming to make things even easier for its clients.

2009 – MANAGEMENT EXPANSION, START OF R&D

For founder and director Piet Noordzij, the time had come to share the leadership of the company. After gaining broad experience across all departments in previous years, his son Leendert Noordzij joined the management team. At that time, KS employed around 90 people and generated half of its revenue from international markets. Twelve roll-forming lines were in operation, producing both punched standard and complex profiles, and from spring onward, laser welding was also introduced. A state-of-the-art slitting line and a fully equipped toolshop were running at full capacity. KS was increasingly recognized as a customer-focused all-rounder in profile solutions, and the demand for specific, specialized profiles continued to grow. The Research & Development department was established, where innovative profile solutions were developed—both on request and proactively—drawing on metallurgical and structural expertise, engineering creativity, and deep customer insight.

2010 – 2012 OPERATING UNDER THE NAME KS PROFIEL, CENTRALIZATION IN MOERDIJK

To clarify the company's repositioning, the name Kontinex Staal was changed to KS Profiel. As the processing of coil and sheet steel began to serve additional customer groups, this activity was placed in a separate company under the name KS Band en Plaat. Between 2010 and 2012, all production activities were fully centralized at the Apolloweg site in Moerdijk. Sales, development, production, and logistics were brought closer together, enabling faster and more customer-focused processes.

2015 – BUILDING OUR OWN ROLL-FORMING LINE

The knowledge and experience with roll-forming lines has grown so significantly that KS Profiel decided to build the next roll-forming line in-house. The roll-forming line is designed and drafted by the now expanded engineering department, which has since been renamed the Roll Forming Technology department. The control software is also developed internally. The construction of the line is fully managed in-house, ensuring that the profiles can be produced exactly as requested by the clients. Maintenance of the roll-forming lines is also handled internally.

2016 – ESTABLISHMENT OF KS FOUNDATION

KS Profiel operates with the conviction that, as a company, it is an active part of society and wants to contribute meaningfully. In earlier years, Piet Noordzij initiated projects in countries like Ethiopia to help underprivileged people build financially independent lives. One of the outcomes was a roll-forming factory that now operates independently. At the end of 2016, the KS Foundation was established. Led by its own independent board, the foundation selects projects to support based on the same mission. KS Profiel allocates 10% of its annual profits to the foundation.

2017 - START SPECIAL PRODUCTS DEPARTMENT

Natuurlijk, hier is de aangepaste vertaling zonder vetgedrukte tekst: To provide the best possible support to its clients, KS Profiel increasingly supplies additional materials alongside its profiles, such as connectors, bolts and nuts, base plates, complete stairwells, and more. As demand for these special products continued to rise, a dedicated Special Products department was established. This department also handles urgent deliveries of profiles that need to be bent instead of roll-formed. From individual system components to fully assembled structural elements, everything can be delivered to the client. The department quickly proved its value, showing rapid growth and even supplying standalone products to customers without accompanying profile orders.

2017 – OPENING OF DISTRIBUTION CENTER

Opposite the headquarters and production facility of KS Profiel, on the Oostelijke Randweg, a new distribution center was opened. Covering 12,000 m², the facility allows customer orders to be stored and distributed in line with construction schedules. This further increases the flexibility of both production and delivery.

2018 – STRONG GROWTH, NEW IDENTITY, INDEPENDENCE OF KS SERVICE CENTER

2019 – SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

Sustainable production is an important part of KS Profiel’s business philosophy. For some time, efforts have been made to minimize and sustainably process waste streams. In the summer of this year, 3,100 solar panels were installed on the roof of the production facility on Apolloweg. The panels were supplied by Van der Valk, a client of KS Profiel. The energy generated by the solar panels now accounts for one-third of the company’s total energy consumption.

2019 – HIGHER, WIDER, LARGER, FASTER

Growth continued, and all sales activities were centralized at the headquarters in Moerdijk. In February, a new roll-forming line—P30—was commissioned. This line can produce complex profiles in the heaviest range, up to 1,000 mm wide and 8 mm thick. These high-capacity profiles make it possible to build taller structures and span wider distances, enabling the construction of larger buildings using roll-formed profiles. This allows KS Profiel to serve clients in sectors such as solar, warehousing, and construction even more effectively. The new machine was also designed for extremely fast changeovers, allowing it to switch quickly between different profile types.

2020 – KS INDUSTRIES: SPECIALIZING IN EXPERTISE-DRIVEN ENTERPRISES

To continue meeting the growing and evolving demands of clients, a major strategic decision was made: KS Profiel was restructured into a group of companies, each with its own area of expertise, operating under the parent company KS Industries. KS Systems delivers complete system solutions such as warehouses and silos. KS Profile focuses entirely on the production of steel profiles. KS Service Center supplies custom-slit coil steel and sheet material. KS Parts and Components organizes components for steel systems in any size and quantity. KS Manufacturing Technology develops and builds innovative machines and tooling designed to optimize industrial production processes as efficiently as possible. KS Works provides skilled professionals for steel production and system construction projects. KS Project Logistics handles the complete logistics and warehousing for steel construction projects—anywhere in the world. What connects these companies is our shared history and culture, our deep knowledge of clients and the craft, and the drive to always do better: workmanship you really want.

2021 – STRATEGIC INVESTMENT IN LAND, A NEW FACILITY, AND MORE EFFICIENT PRODUCTION

Along the Oostelijke Randweg, adjacent to the distribution center, a 35,000 m² plot of land became available. Opportunities like this are rare, and KS Industries acquired the site with future growth in mind. Initial plans for development were enthusiastically launched. However, due to economic uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, these plans were temporarily put on hold. For the time being, the land is used as outdoor storage by KS Project Logistics. That same year, KS Profile commissioned a new production line with highly efficient output. The line was developed and built by KS Roll Forming and produces high-frequency welded profiles—an important step forward in both technological capability and production speed, directly benefiting customers. KS Project Logistics and KS Systems relocated to Graanweg 17, where they moved into a brand-new office and logistics center. The location is strategically positioned with excellent access to the Port of Rotterdam and direct connections to Germany and Belgium by road, rail, and water. The distribution center received a BREEAM sustainability rating of ‘Very Good’, perfectly aligning with the sustainability goals of KS Industries.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE WITH CONFIDENCE

The various companies continue to grow independently within their own areas of expertise. Each operates with its own goals and serves its customer portfolio—ranging from sister companies to external clients. Projects vary from leading large-scale construction assignments to delivering custom-made components, building machinery, providing logistics services, and mediating skilled personnel. With confidence and great enthusiasm, the KS companies work alongside their clients to shape the future.
